New Providence is the home of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Cross a bridge to Paradise Island, and you'll find amazing white beaches, clear crystal waters and some of the world's top vacation and honeymoon resorts. The Bahamas are only a 35 minute plane ride from Miami, making it an easy and fast trip from the USA for wonderful tropical ambiance. | People of the Bahamas: People in the Bahamas are laid back and in no rush. You'll need to adjust to the laid back slow pace. The Bahamian people are friendly, will happily greet you and speak, just don't try to rush them! When in the islands, do as the islanders and relax and slow down. Language spoken: English is the main language spoken, and a dialect of English and Africa called Patois. The English spoken is lyrical, Weather: The weather in the Bahamas is slightly cooler than the Caribbean because it is closer to North America. The weather is tropical with winds from the gulf stream that give it a the tropical breeze. Weather in the summer tend to be the upper 80's F to 90 F and in the winter in the mid 70 degrees Farenheit. The weather in the winter make it a great get away for sunshine and fabulous beaches. Hurricanes season is June to November and hurricanes tend to pass the islands from the south when heading to the USA. The Bahamas take hurricane precautions. It is advisable you buy travel insurance when traveling to any island during hurricane season. Casinos: Yes Paradise Island, Nassau, Freeport Safety: As in any city, there is crime, robberies and muggings. You are advised to stay in the tourist areas and always walk with a companion. Stay away from unknown areas and streets at night so you don't become a crime victim. Use common sense when traveling. Currency: The Bahamian dollar is on par with the US Dollar. The US dollar is accepted in the islands. If you want to exchange travelers checks for island currency, expect to pay a fee. Electrical Current: 120 volt, which means your hairdryer, curling iron and shaver from the USA will work without a converter. | Getting to the Bahamas: The main airports with regularly scheduled flights are Freeport and Nassau. They accomodate both commercial and charter flights. You can also sail to the Bahamas, either by sailboat or cruise ship. The Bahamas levy a departure tax on travelers leaving the islands. If you leave from Freeport, the tax is $18 to $20 per person, if you leave from the Nassau airport, the tax is $15.00 per person. The tax should be included in the cost of your commercial airline ticket. Check to see if you've paid the tax in your ticket cost, if not, you have to have CASH to pay it. Getting around the islands: There are taxis, buses and rental cars or rental scooters. Avis, Budget and Herts all rent cars on the island. Driving is on the LEFT hand side of the road which can be really confusing for those who are used to driving on the right like in the USA. Island Hopping: There is a ferry that connects New Providence Island (Nassau) to Grand Bahama Island, trip time takes 2 hours. Bahamas Air and Western air fly between the islands. There is a water taxi and a ferry between Nassau and Paradise Island or you can take a taxi and drive across the bridge. |
